The relationship between Lorca, Dalí and Buñuel at Madrid's Oxbridge-inspired Residencia de Estudiantes in the period between 1922 and 1927 has spawned a range of literary works.
Now, from director Paul Morrison, comes a film that imagines the friendships between the three men as well as the factors that led to their break-ups in a nation in the midst of extraordinary political, social and cultural shifts.
The film moves from the hedonism of Madrid in the early 1920s to the dangers and uncertainties of 1936 as Spain was plunged into civil conflict. Morrison (Solomon and Gaenor, Wondrous Oblivion) expertly delineates the passions, fears and betrayals of an intricate triangle of relationships shaped by physical desire, shared ambitions and, eventually, professional rivalries. |
